These Sugar Starfish, PIASTER OCHRACEUS, are 1 to 2 inches wide and go by a variety of names including common starfish, seastar or sugar starfish. Each starfish has had a hole drilled toward the end of one leg to facilitate the making of jewelry or other art projects. Sugar starfish have a distinctive granular surface, reminiscent of a sugar coating, hence their name. Each one is a slightly different shade of burnt orange color with white dots on top. These smaller starfish are a great size for earrings or other jewelry. Starfish move around using millions of tiny short legs which when dried look like short stiff hairs on the underside of the starfish. You can see some of the “hairs” in the photos of the flipped over starfish. Be advised these “hairs” tend to break off easily.
Not suitable for use in aquariums, these specimens should be kept dry (brief immersion for dying is OK). These specimens have been professionally dried, cleaned, and sanitized. Dried starfish tend to have a slight dried shrimp type smell to them. These are natural products, each one different and unique and a few specimens may have a tiny chip off an edge or some minor imperfection. These specimens have been legally and sustainably harvested. Out of country buyers my apologies but due to US export law, I am not able to ship wildlife product out of the United States.
